NORA IUGA

NORA IUGA , born January 4, 1931, in Bucharest (name at birth: Eleonora), poetess, prose writer and translator. Iuga’s first published volume was It Is Not My Fault, in 1968. Second volume, The Circle’s Captivity (1970) is withdrawn from the market just a few weeks after its release, due to a decision of State Committee for Culture and Art. Interdiction on publishing for eight years, till 1978. She was four times awarded the Romanian Writer’s Union Award: in 1980, for Opinions concerning Pain; in 1994, for the novel Leopold Bloom’s Soap; in 1998, for the translation of Günter Grass’s The Tin Drum; and in 2000, for The Sexagenarian Woman and the Young Man. In 2007, she received the Friedrich Gundolf Awardoffered by the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung, for promoting German literature (amongst other literary prizes). Between 2009 and 2010 she received a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) grant – the most important grant offered by the Germans to a foreign author. Several of her books have been translated and published in Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Bulgaria and Slovenia. She is a member of the Romanian Writer’s Union and of PEN-Club.
